I have Bunions, what should I do?Updated 2 days ago

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of your big toe. It happens when your big toe starts to lean toward your other toes, pushing the joint at the base of the toe outward. Over time, this can make the joint look swollen, red, or sore.

What causes bunions?

Some common causes of bunions are:

  • Genetics - They can run in families, so if a parent has them, you may be more likely to develop one too.
  • Footwear - Consistently wearing shoes with a narrow or pointed toe box (such as heels or tight, pointed dress shoes) can squeeze the toes together and contribute to the formation of bunions.
  • Foot posture - Flat feet or the way you walk can put extra pressure on the big toe joint over time.

What should I do to resolve bunions?

There's no single overnight fix, but there's plenty you can do to relieve pain and slow or stop the bunion from getting worse:

  • Wear natural footwear – Choose shoes with a wide, roomy toe box that lets your toes sit naturally without being squashed.
  • Work on your foot mechanics – Simple exercises and stretches can help improve the way your foot moves and reduce strain on the joint.

*See a professional – A podiatrist or physiotherapist can assess your specific situation and recommend the best plan for you, whether that's orthotics, exercises, or other treatment options. Make sure you seek professional assistance if your bunions are causing significant pain, affecting how you work or progressing.
