I have Hallux Limitus/ Rigidus, what should I do?Updated 18 days ago

What is Hallux Limitus/Rigidus?

The big toe joint plays a crucial role in normal walking and movement - it needs to bend upward significantly every time you take a step and push off the ground. When this movement becomes limited, it is known as hallux limitus. If the joint becomes almost completely rigid and immobile, this is called hallux rigidus.

Both conditions cause pain and stiffness at the base of the big toe, which is often worse during walking, running, or any activity that requires the toe to bend. Over time, a bony bump may develop on top of the joint, and the surrounding area can become swollen and tender.

What causes Hallux Limitus/Rigidus?

Hallux limitus and rigidus typically develop gradually over time due to a combination of factors:

  • Genetics - some people are simply born with a foot structure that makes the big toe joint more vulnerable to restricted movement
  • Previous injury - a sprain, fracture, or repeated trauma to the big toe joint can trigger joint damage and early stiffness
  • Poor foot mechanics - the way the foot moves during walking has a significant influence on how much load passes through the big toe joint. Overpronation in particular can limit the joint's ability to move freely
  • Tight calf muscles - reduced ankle mobility places greater demand on the big toe joint during walking, accelerating wear over time
  • Footwear - stiff soled or narrow shoes restrict the natural movement of the toe joint. High heels for example, alter the way load is distributed through the forefoot, placing the big toe joint under increased stress

How can I resolve Hallux Limitus/Rigidus?

Early intervention is important - the more motion that is lost in the joint, the harder it becomes to restore. With the right approach many people can significantly reduce pain and improve function.

  • Toe and foot mobility exercises - gentle, targeted movements to encourage the joint to move through as much range as possible and prevent further stiffening
  • Foot strengthening - building strength in the small muscles of the foot helps support the joint and improve the way load is distributed during movement
  • Calf and ankle mobility work - improving ankle range of motion reduces the compensatory demand placed on the big toe joint with every step
  • Footwear - transitioning to natural footwear with a wide toe box and flexible sole allows the toe joint to move freely, rather than being restricted by a stiff or narrow shoe

*See a professional - a podiatrist or physiotherapist can assess how much motion you have remaining in the joint and tailor a treatment plan accordingly.
