What to do if can’t checkout / your card payment is declining?Updated 6 days ago

What to do if your online payment won’t go through and you cannot checkout

If your payment didn’t go through, it’s usually quick to fix. Here are the cards we accept, plus the most common reasons payments get declined and what to do next.

Quick reset (try this first)

  • Try again in a different browser or device.
  • Turn off any VPN, ad blockers, or privacy extensions, then try again.
  • If you’re using Apple Pay or Google Pay, try entering your card details manually instead.

What cards do we accept?

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Union Pay
  • JCB
  • Discover (US customers only)
  • Maestro (US customers only)
  • Diners Club (US customers only)

Common reasons a card gets declined

Your bank blocked the transaction

This is the most common cause. Banks can flag online or international purchases as suspicious, even when the card is valid and has funds available.

What to do

  • Call your bank or card issuer and ask them to approve the transaction.
  • Then try checkout again.

Incorrect card details entered

A mistyped card number, expiry date, CVV, or billing address can cause an immediate decline.

What to do

  • Re enter your details carefully.
  • Make sure the billing address matches what your bank has on file.

Name or billing address doesn’t match what the bank has on file

Even if the card details are correct, some payments will fail if the billing name or billing address doesn’t match the bank’s records (including unit number, suburb, postcode, and spacing).

What to do

  • Enter the billing name exactly as it appears on the card/bank account.
  • Use the billing address your bank has on file (even if it’s different to your shipping address).
  • If you’re not sure, check your banking app or contact your bank.

Insufficient funds or credit limit reached

The purchase may be above your available balance or credit limit.

What to do

  • Check your balance or limit, or try a different card.

Expired card

The card may have passed its expiry date.

What to do

  • Check the expiry date and use an updated card.

Card not enabled for online or international payments

The Foot Collective is based in Queensland, Australia, so depending on where you’re located, your bank may treat the transaction as international even when checking out in your local currency.

Some cards (especially debit cards) need to be enabled for online or cross border transactions by your bank. This can be especially common for customers outside Australia.

What to do

  • Check your banking app to ensure international transactions (and online purchases) are enabled for your card, then try again.
  • If it still fails, call your bank or card issuer and ask them to approve the transaction.
  • Then try checkout again.

Some Australian banks (including CommBank) may flag Shopify Payments from our Australian store as “international”

Even though The Foot Collective is based in Brisbane and your purchase is local, our Shopify checkout processes payments through Stripe’s payment infrastructure. In some cases, your bank may see an international acquiring entity in the transaction metadata and block it at the fraud screening level.

What to do

  • If you’re comfortable, temporarily enable International transactions for your card in your banking app, then try again. You can switch it off again straight after.
  • CommBank app steps: Cards → select your card → Manage → toggle International transactions on.

Business or corporate cards

Some business cards have extra security rules that can block online or international purchases.

What to do

  • Ask your finance team or card issuer to approve the transaction, or try a personal card.

Discover cards

Discover cards are accepted for US customers only. If you’re shopping elsewhere in the world, Discover isn’t supported.

What to do

  • Use Visa, Mastercard, or American Express instead.

Prepaid or gift cards

Prepaid cards may be declined if they don’t have a billing address registered, or if the balance doesn’t fully cover the order total.

What to do

  • Register a billing address with the card provider, or use a standard debit or credit card.

Google Pay or Apple Pay billing address mismatch

If you’re using Google Pay or Apple Pay, the billing address saved to your wallet can be different to the billing address entered at checkout. If they don’t match, the transaction may be declined.

What to do

  • Check the billing address saved in your Google Pay or Apple Pay wallet and update it if needed.
  • Try again, or enter your card details manually instead of using a wallet.

Daily transaction limit

Some banks apply daily spend limits or transaction limits (especially on debit cards), which can block a purchase even when there are funds available.

What to do

  • Check your daily limit in your banking app, or contact your bank to increase it.
  • Try a different card if needed.
